How we met each other
Philip and Celia both knew of each other from being captains on separate kickball teams in the same recreation league in town. He says they were rivals, but Celia didn't recognize his team's name...so the rivalry might have only been one sided (her team kept beating his).
Before they officially met, Philip would call Celia Ms. Captain when they shook hands before each game. He didn't learn her name, however, until they had run into each other a few more times. Ultimately, they say they met at Palmetto Brewing! (R.I.P.). They then proceeded to have a very long first date there too. Celia's kickball team ultimately retired, and she joined Philip’s team. So now they are on the same team and play on Thursdays together.
These days, Celia enjoys playing sports like tennis and pickleball and shooting pool. She likes working out at Orangetheory and running. She likes hiking and has even dragged Philip camping. She likes to read on the couch with her cat Cowboy.
Philip has been getting into brewing his own beer lately. He knows everything about football (college and NFL). He loves to run. He likes going to Orangetheory (with Celia!) He’s very good at initiating group hangouts and keeping up with his friends.
They enjoy living downtown in the Ansonborough neighborhood with Cowboy where Celia spends her time perfecting the courtyard garden.
How we met the wedding party
Maid of Honor
Katie Brindley
Katie and Celia have been friends since sophomore year of high school. Katie likes Formula 1 and Philadelphia sports. She and Philip love to argue about the Eagles and the Panthers, and Katie has even taken Celia to a Phillies game, which Philip continutes to be bitter about. Celia likes to convince Katie to go hiking with her, which she does not enjoy. Katie does, however, love her two cats Brie and Cormac!
Matron of Honor
Kristmar Muldrow
Kristmar and Celia's friendship goes all the way back to freshman year of high school, and they have had a countless number of sleepovers since then. Now they love to try new restaurants and catch up over delicious food. Kristmar is a talented graphic designer in Atlanta who loves pottery, her husband Thad and her dog Pepper.
Bridesmaid
Shannon McGue
Shannon and Celia have done all sorts of sporty activities since they became friends in Mrs. Lankford's english class sophomore year of high school. Shannon has talked Celia into not only one half marathon but two PLUS a triathalon. She has yet to successfully convince Celia to do a full marathon. Shannon and her partner Tyler live in Durham with their baby Ari, dog Atlas and two cats, Juniper and Claudette.
Bridesmaid
Kelli Chaffin
Kelli and Celia met in college at Wake Forest and have since met up in San Diego, Denver, Charleston and Winston-Salem to continue their adventures together. Kelli's energy is infectious, and Celia can't help but laugh when she's around. Kelli and Celia have also been hiking together, but at least she volunteered to go. Kelli currently lives in Denver with her husband, Matt, where she works for a marketing agency.
Bridesmaid
Allison Callahan
Allison and Celia can talk for hours, and it's been that way since they met at Wake. With a dozen trips between Philadelphia (sorry Philip), Charleston, Virginia and Boston over the years, Allison and Celia have kept the conversation going. Allison is a lawyer in Philiadelphia with her husband, Kyle and dog Benzie and cat Penny.
Bridesmaid
Caroline Root
Caroline and Celia also met at Wake Forest and had the best summer together living in Winston-Salem between junior and senior year. Between girls trips and visits, they've ridden horses, told ghost stories around the campfire and walked along the beach. Caroline is a nurse practitioner in Richmond with her husband Nick, son Charlie and dog Otis. Caroline and Nick have a little girl on the way too, and she will be here this summer.
Bridesmaid
Lindsey Parker
Lindsey and Celia were roommates in Boston but are both from South Carolina. It's still amazing that they have Craigslist to thank for their friendship. Lindsey and Celia had the best time in Boston exploring the city, hosting parties, shooting pool at the Hopewell and eating brunch. Lindsey, her husband Kevin and dog Brutus live in Boston still and love going to Nantucket and the Cape in the summer.
Bridesmaid
Michaela Martinez
Michaela and Celia first bonded over their love of the tv show Psych while in grad school together at Boston University, and they have been friends ever since. Michaela is another victim of Celia's hiking trips, and one time in Asheville even had to hike in the pouring rain. Celia had a great time, but Michaela did not join her hike in Arizona on the next trip. Michaela lives in Durham with her husband Michael, their son Malcolm and dog Apollo.
Bridesmaid
Katie Hahn
Katie and Celia met through her friend Baxter and bonded over their love of Taylor Swift and the beach. Katie and Celia traveled to Atlanta to see Taylor Swift in concert a few years back. They both enjoy wine and movie nights, and Celia has even twisted Katie's arm to join her kickball team for a few seasons. She and Baxter still sub for the team sometimes. Katie and her husband Baxter recently had a daughter named Lillian and currently live in Charleston.
Best Man
Horton Gray Jolly, II
Gray is Philip's father, so Philip has known him the longest out of all the groomsmen. Their relationship has centered around sports the majority of Philip's life, whether Gray was coaching him in soccer and basketball or the two were competing in fantasy football leagues as co-owners and opponents dating back to 2001. They also grew close through Boy Scouts; Gray served as a scout leader, and they famously traveled to Philmont together in 2010. Over their scouting years, they spent nearly 100 nights under the stars. Today, they still talk three to four times a week, with phone calls ranging from 5 minutes to multiple hours.
Groomsman
Ian Milder
Ian and Philip are better known as "Dumb and Dumber" by Philip's mom. They met in 9th grade gym class and agreed to run cross country together in 10th grade, which is when their friendship truly took hold. While Ian was the more naturally talented athlete, Philip served as Captain, and they eventually won a 4x800 state championship relay together--helping their team take home first overall in 2014. Their friendship continued through college after Ian transferred to App State his sophomore year. They spent a month traveling across Europe together in 2017 and have remained close ever since; Philip was even asked to speak at Ian's wedding last spring.
Groomsman
Will Ewing
Will and Philip met in the backseat of a truck--blindfolded--during their first day of fraternity pledging in the fall of 2014. Even in that moment, Philip had a feeling the guy next to him would become a close friend, though he didn't realize they would become friends for the next 12 years (and counting). They lived together for a year in the fraternity house, then moved next door to each other senior year, and finally became partners for their senior thesis in their fifth year. They stay connected as fierce competitors in fantasy football league, and seemingly, by always being to be groomsmen in the same weddings for mutual friends.
Groomsman
Zach Holder
Philip and Zach's relationship actually started out rocky because Zach thought Philip was a "nerd" when they first met in 8th grade. After a few months, Zach came around to liking him, though he still maintains that Philip is, in fact, a nerd. In high school, they shared leadership roles as Zach captained the JV cross country team while Philip captained Varsity. Both are members of a high school fantasy football that has been running since 2013; they meet annually for the draft in Winston-Salem and link up whenever Philip "blesses" the city with his presence. Over the past year, Zach has discovered the greatness of Charleston with multiple visits.
Groomsman
Eric Coombs
In the year of our Lord 2016, Eric and Philip met on Philip's first day working at Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock, NC. In typical "Coombs" fashion, it took him awhile to warm up to someone new. but once he realized they shared the same circle of friends, he began to soften. They eventually discovered they had the same college major, which led to years of taking classes and spending long hours in the library together--usually followed by porch beers at Tapp Room. Philip helped get Eric into fantasy football, and some would argue Eric is now even more obsessed with it than Philip. After college. they both moved to Charleston, became roommates, and were pivotal members of the Eastside community for over four years.
Groomsman
Nick Ward
Nick and Philip's relationship began in the fall of their freshman year as pledge brothers living in the same dorm. Their friendship really took off senior year when they lived next door to each other. It was during that time they developed a dynamic that still exists today: Nick presents a conspiracy theory, and Philip loves to pick it apart. They are also in several fantasy football leagues together, where both are still chasing their first dynasty championship after five years and a league-leading number of trades.
Groomsman
Daniel Olzer
Olzer and Philip's relationship began in the spring of 2016 when Olzer was rushing the fraternity and Philip was the Rush Chair. They clicked immediately; their college days were spent drinking Busch Light, watching football on Sundays at Bar 5, and making halftime runs to Hardee's. They have traveled to support the App State Mountaineers several times, including trips to Penn State and Boise State. About a year and a half ago, Olzer and his wife moved to the Charleston suburbs after falling in love with the area while visiting Philip. However, it is important to note--and please mention this to him--that because he lives in the suburbs and not the city, he cannot technically claim he "lives in Charleston."
Groomsman
Kenny Kneisel
Kenny and Philip share an "older and younger brother" bond, with Philip being two years Kenny's senior. They met in the fall of 2012 at cross country practice, building their relationship on long-run conversations about sports. For over two years, Philip drove Kenny home after practice, where they spent their time discussing the shortcomings of Daniel Jones and the general "atrocities" of being a Wake Forest fan. They now compete in the same dynasty fantasy football league, where Kenny has found success much to Philip's dismay. They stay close by hanging out whenever Philip visits Winston-Salem, and Philip frequently relies on Kenny's golf insights in his quest to finally break 100.
Groomsman
Clay Carpenter
On a chilly spring night in Winston-Salem around the year 2018 AD, Clay and Philip were introduced by a friend of Philp's who happened to be Clay's then girlfriend. Even though Clay laughed at all of Philip's jokes the whole night, they wouldn't become close friends until Clay had ditched that chick in France and spontaneously decided to visit Philip with Zach Holder for Philip's birthday in 2021 in Charleston. Well, Clay decided instantly to move down to Charleston and with Eric Coombs' approval, Clay moved in with Eric and Philip at 29 Cooper Street. They became known as the "Cooper street boys" to all of the locals. Clay and Philip lived together for 3 years where their relationship grew by competing over everything from who could get more steps in to who could tear their ACL first...Clay won that one.
